Train-the-Trainer Project at D.R.Congo

The Rotary Club of Taree and HandUp Congo Invite your donations for the project:

TRAIN THE TRAINERS Provide rural obstetric emergency training in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Key facts:

*The latest figures record the DRC suffered 547 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, which is the 4th highest rate in the world. By contrast, Australia has 3 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births

*DRC’s neonatal mortality rate is 62 per 1,000 live births which is 20 times higher compared to Australia

*Lack of infrastructure, medical skills shortages, humanitarian conflict and post-conflict settings hinder progress in reducing the burden of maternal and neonatal mortality

*Care by skilled health professionals before, during and after childbirth can save the lives of women and newborns

*Many women give birth at home because they cannot afford a hospital or there is none. These women need to receive information to ease their childbearing

The Project:

To provide rural obstetric emergency training to healthcare workers, including traditional birth attendants on the front line in remote villages in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Our train-the-trainer project aims to provide Congolese healthcare teams with the necessary skills and equipment to manage life threatening obstetric emergencies and subsequently save lives of mom and babies in DRC indirectly contributing towards achieving one of the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals: that of reducing Maternal and Neonatal Morbidity and Mortality.

Why the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)?

In January 2023, our volunteer Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS)/HandUp Congo team conducted such training in 3 venues in the DRC as a pilot project. We found a great need for skills training and therefore the idea came about to implement the project in a larger scale.

DRC has two high profile organizations with extensive emergency education and project management experience as well as Rotary connections. These are HandUp Congo www.handupcongo.org and the DRC Emergency Medicine Association www.amurdc.org who will help implement and make this project sustainable.

The Plan:

To provide training with careful selection of committed Training Participants from 5 key regions in the DRC over the next 3 years commencing this November 2024. The “Train the Trainers” Program could then subsequently produce enough Trainers to continue training others. The more funds we receive, the more people who can be trained and more lives can be saved!
